Why Steel Works in Texas

Steel buildings work in Texas because every frame is engineered for its own county, and Texas counties pull in different directions: Gulf Coast wind, tornadoes and hail inland, snow in the Panhandle. We are a dealer of pre-engineered steel building kits made from American steel; our metal buildings in Texas ship with PE-stamped drawings for the parcel.

Wind enters the drawings as a design wind speed under ASCE 7, highest on the coast, where a state windstorm certificate also applies. Harvey came ashore near Rockport in 2017 as a Category 4 hurricane; the frame is engineered to the county’s design wind speed, not to a named storm. NOAA’s 1991 to 2010 averages put Texas first for tornadoes, and a design wind speed does not cover a tornado.

Hail is why many Texas owners start with metal carports: Texas logged more major hail events than any other state in 2025. Long, hot summers and the statewide freeze of February 2021 argue for insulating a metal building. Snow is a real design load in the Panhandle.

Houston Black clay on the Blackland Prairie swells and shrinks, so foundations there follow a soil report. Permits, floodplains and windstorm rules are in the codes and permits section below.

Building Codes and Permits in Texas

Building codes in Texas

Texas has no statewide building code for most buildings. Local Government Code Chapter 214 names the International Building Code for cities, and each city adopts its own edition and amendments; Houston and Lubbock enforce the 2021 IBC, with loads from ASCE 7-16. Drawings are prepared to the edition your city enforces; your building department is the authoritative source.

Who issues the permit

Inside city limits, the city issues the permit. Outside them, it depends on the county: Bell County has no building permit, code or zoning, while larger counties may adopt a fire code that requires a permit for commercial buildings. We don’t pull the permit; we supply PE-stamped drawings, load calculations and specifications.

Coastal windstorm certification

In 14 coastal counties and parts of Harris County east of State Highway 146, a building qualifies for Texas Windstorm Insurance Association coverage only if it meets the Texas Department of Insurance windstorm code and earns a WPI-8 certificate of compliance. A TDI inspector or an appointed Texas-licensed engineer inspects during construction. Ask about windstorm certification when you request your quote.

Floodplain and expansive soils

Check your parcel on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center, then with the county: unincorporated Harris County, for example, requires a permit for any development, including floodplain work. On Blackland Prairie clay, a local engineer designs the foundation, and a local contractor pours it to our anchor bolt layout.

What a Steel Building Costs in Texas

A steel building in Texas is priced by its size, the engineering its site needs and its finish level. A coastal county adds frame weight for wind and the windstorm certificate, the Panhandle adds snow, and most of the state sits between. We quote metal building kits for sale across Texas parcel by parcel.

Size and height

From 20×20 to 30×40: carports with a closed storage bay, garages and RV garages.

From 30×50 to 40×80: workshops and horse barns, or a storefront with offices behind it.

From 60×80 up: warehouses and service buildings, plus hay and equipment barns.

Local loads (Texas-specific)

The same 40×60 is a different frame in Galveston County, where wind sets the steel, and in Potter County around Amarillo, where snow does. Wider spans add steel. Give us your county and, on the coast, whether the parcel is inside the TDI designated area.

Finish level

A bare kit (frame, roof and wall panels) is the $ tier. Insulation, doors and liner panels take it to $$, and a finished office inside to $$$. Dollar figures by size are in our metal building cost guide.

How Texas Owners Use Steel Buildings by Region

Gulf Coast (Houston, Beaumont, Corpus Christi; Harris, Jefferson, Nueces counties)

The Gulf Coast builds for trade and wind. Port Houston handles more waterborne tonnage than any other U.S. port, and businesses from Houston to Beaumont and Corpus Christi need shops with office wings and service buildings. Frames here carry the state’s highest design wind speeds, and Jefferson and Nueces counties sit inside the TDI windstorm area. For a customer-facing front, see our metal office buildings.

North Texas and Horse Country (Dallas, Fort Worth, Weatherford; Tarrant, Parker, Denton counties)

North Texas pairs distribution around DFW with horse country to the west. Weatherford calls itself the Cutting Horse Capital of the World, and the American Horse Council counts more horses in Texas than in any other state. Owners build stables, covered arenas and metal barns with spring hail in mind. Start with our horse barns and stables.

Central and East Texas (Austin, Waco, Longview, Tyler; Travis, McLennan, Gregg, Smith counties)

Central Texas is ranch and commuter country. Texas leads the states in cattle, so Hill Country and Blackland Prairie ranches need hay cover and equipment sheds, and lots around Austin add garages and some metal building homes. East Texas holds about 12 million acres of Piney Woods timberland, and families there keep campers under a roof. See our RV garages.

West Texas and the Panhandle (Lubbock, Odessa, Midland, Amarillo; Lubbock, Ector, Midland, Potter counties)

The Permian Basin around Odessa and Midland produces more crude oil than any other U.S. region, and its service yards need covered bays for trucks and pipe. The High Plains around Lubbock grow about 30 percent of the nation’s cotton, by Plains Cotton Growers’ count. In the Panhandle, snow is part of the load calculation. A metal building with a lean-to keeps equipment dry on the side.

Design Your Building Now
50×80 Equipment Barn

We needed storage for machinery, trailers, and the attachments that never seemed to have a permanent place. The larger footprint lets us keep things accessible. I left room for changing equipment needs rather than filling every section right away.

Roy R.  Abilene, Texas

30×50 RV Garage

We wanted the camper and its supplies together at home. Planning the clearance and approach was just as important as the floor space. There is room to walk around the trailer and organize equipment before loading for a trip.

Sherry D.  Tyler, Texas

40×60 Workshop

I use the shop for equipment repairs and personal vehicle projects. The open layout gives me room for larger jobs without crowding the benches. I added storage after working in the space so the cabinets would go where they were most useful.

Walter P.  Waco, Texas

Frequently Asked Questions

No, Texas has no single statewide code for most buildings. Each city adopts its own edition of the International Building Code and its own amendments; Houston and Lubbock are on the 2021 IBC. Our drawings follow the edition your city enforces, which also sets the ASCE 7 version for wind and snow loads.

Inside city limits you do, and the city issues it. On unincorporated land it depends on the county: some issue no building permit, while counties with an adopted fire code require one for commercial buildings. Floodplain permits, septic rules and platting can still apply, so call the county before you order.

Yes, we supply metal carports across Texas as pre-engineered kits, from a single open bay to RV height, or with an enclosed storage bay. Hail and summer sun are the usual reasons. Each carport frame is engineered for your county’s wind and snow loads, like a full building.

It handles the wind load engineered for its county, not every storm. Coastal frames carry the state’s highest design wind speeds; in the TDI area, a windstorm inspection during construction earns the certificate. ASCE 7 sets no tornado load for ordinary garages and barns, so a tornado shelter is a separate structure. For hail, panel gauge and profile are chosen for your site. See whether a barndominium can withstand a hurricane.

Yes, we deliver across Texas, from Beaumont to El Paso and Amarillo, and Panhandle drawings include the county’s ground snow load. On a remote ranch, make sure a truck can reach the pad. We confirm your production schedule and delivery window when your order is finalized. Your crew or a local erector assembles the building; if you want installation arranged, ask when you request your quote.
