Why Richmond Builders Choose Steel
Richmond builders choose steel because a clear-span frame gives a warehouse or shop wide bays without interior columns and still leaves room for an office up front. We deliver metal buildings in Richmond for that kind of work: a steel building for a contractor or distributor as often as a garage for a homeowner. The demand follows freight. I-95 and I-64 cross in the metro, I-295 bypasses the city to the north and east, and the Port of Virginia’s barge service carries containers up the James between Hampton Roads and the Richmond Marine Terminal. Developers are still adding distribution and industrial space in Chesterfield and eastern Henrico. Farther out, Goochland and Powhatan have horse properties, while suburban lots in Henrico and Chesterfield call for garages and workshops.
Looking for a metal builder near you? Here is what we are: a dealer of pre-engineered steel building kits, not the manufacturer. The steel is American-made, a licensed professional engineer stamps the drawings, and the kit ships to your parcel. For a business, that often means one of our steel buildings with an office, with the shop or warehouse floor and an insulated office section inside one engineered frame. Your own crew or a local erector assembles it; ask about installation when you request the quote.
Weather here is an engineering input. Design wind speed and ground snow load come from ASCE 7 for your parcel’s coordinates, and you can look both up in the ASCE Hazard Tool. Richmond summers are humid, and winter storms can bring sleet and freezing rain. So the office end gets insulation, and the shop needs ventilation to keep condensation off the panels. The wide bay itself is the job of a clear span metal building.
Which permit office you deal with depends on where the parcel sits: inside city limits, in Henrico County or in Chesterfield County. The permits section below names each office and lists what we hand you for the filing.

Richmond Building Permits and Local Codes
Richmond is an independent city, so it belongs to no county and runs its own permit office. Inside city limits, the Bureau of Permits and Inspections in the Department of Planning and Development Review takes the application. In Henrico County it’s the Department of Building Construction and Inspections, and in Chesterfield County the Building Inspection Department. Hanover County’s Building Inspections office covers Mechanicsville and the Town of Ashland. Confirm which of these handles your parcel before you apply.
Zoning comes first. The city’s Zoning Administration confirms that setbacks and the use of the building fit the zoning district. Richmond is replacing its zoning ordinance through Code Refresh, so ask which rules apply to your lot on the day you file. Plan review then checks the structural drawings under the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code; the statewide side is covered on our Virginia codes and permits page. A parcel in a mapped floodplain along the James also falls under the city’s floodplain rules. Once the permit is issued, the Bureau inspects the work at set stages until the final inspection closes the permit.
Your quote package includes PE-stamped drawings showing the design wind speed and ground snow load for your parcel, load calculations, specifications and an anchor bolt layout for the concrete contractor. You or your contractor file the package with the city or the county. If the site is in a floodplain, tell us at the quote stage, because the anchoring and foundation details change with it.
Steel Buildings We Deliver in Richmond
What a Steel Building Costs in Richmond
Every Richmond quote is a custom configuration, priced on the building’s size, the loads its parcel has to carry and the finish level. Locally, the ASCE 7 wind and snow loads move the number most, along with frame weight on wide clear spans. An office section adds insulation and interior framing on top of the shell. Tell us whether you need a shop, a warehouse with an office or a horse barn. For national dollar ranges on a large footprint, see our 10,000 sq ft metal building cost guide.
25×25 to 30×50 fits most garages and workshops on suburban lots in Henrico and Chesterfield.
40×60 to 40×100 covers shops and warehouses with an office section, as well as contractor storage buildings.
60×80 to 60×120 is the range for larger warehouses, industrial storage and horse barns west of the city.
The design wind speed and ground snow load for your parcel set the size of the frame and the secondary members. A site in the James River floodplain adds anchoring and foundation work beyond the base footprint.
Shops, warehouses and office buildings sit on a concrete slab. A horse barn can keep the slab to the aisle and put a compacted base under the stalls, a choice you make with your site contractor. Whatever you pour, share the anchor bolt layout from the drawings with the concrete crew before they set the forms.

Design Your Building NowServing Richmond and Surrounding Counties
We deliver across the City of Richmond and into Henrico and Chesterfield, the two counties that border it, including Glen Allen, Short Pump, Midlothian and Chester. Trucks also run to Hanover County, where Mechanicsville and Ashland are, and to Goochland, Powhatan, New Kent and Charles City counties.
There’s no branch office in Richmond. Orders are handled from our main office in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and one representative stays with yours from the first call to delivery. Put the parcel address in your first message, since the address decides which permit office reviews the drawings.
Sites past the suburbs need a closer look at access. A farm in Goochland or Powhatan may sit at the end of a long gravel lane with a narrow gate, and the delivery truck still has to reach the building pad. We work that out during the quote, whether the order is a commercial shop in Chesterfield or one of our horse barns and stables west of the city.

From Quote to Installed Building
Send the width, length and height you have in mind, plus the ZIP code of the parcel, whether it’s in the city, Henrico or Chesterfield. We work out the wind and snow loads for that exact location and the anchor bolt layout, then send back a line-item quote with the PE drawing package included.
The stamped drawings go to whoever files the permit, you or your contractor, at the city’s Bureau of Permits and Inspections or the county building office. Plan reviewers on commercial construction sometimes come back with questions about the engineering package. When they do, we answer them directly, so the filing doesn’t stall while you relay messages.
Your production and delivery schedule is confirmed once the order is placed. The kit arrives pre-cut and pre-drilled, with the drawings your crew or a local erector builds from. Before the truck is booked, we check that it can reach the site.
Richmond Steel Building Questions
Yes. We deliver to parcels inside the City of Richmond and throughout Henrico, Chesterfield and Hanover counties, with Goochland, Powhatan, New Kent and Charles City covered too. Include the site address in your quote request so we can check truck access and confirm the delivery details for that parcel. Delivery covers all of Virginia, so a site farther from the city still qualifies.
The office that issues your permit is the one for the jurisdiction your parcel sits in. Richmond is an independent city, so land inside city limits goes to the Bureau of Permits and Inspections in the Department of Planning and Development Review. Henrico parcels go to the Department of Building Construction and Inspections, and Chesterfield parcels to the Building Inspection Department.
We supply the kit, the PE-stamped drawings and delivery, and the building goes up with your own crew or a local erector you hire. If you want installation arranged instead, ask about coverage at your address when you request the quote. The kit ships pre-cut and pre-drilled, so an erector who has put up metal buildings before can work straight from the drawing set.
Yes. An office section inside the building, or an office wing attached to it, is engineered in the same PE-stamped drawing set as the shop or warehouse. Tell us the office size, where it goes and whether it needs its own entrance. The whole building, office included, is priced as one configuration.
You call the main office. There’s no Richmond office, so every order goes through Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where one representative handles your project from the first call through delivery. If you’re planning a horse barn or stable, mention it at the start so stall layout and aisle width are part of the first conversation. The number is (888) 415-1576, the same one shown on this page.
