Why Steel Works in New York
Steel buildings work in New York because each frame is engineered for the town it stands in, and New York towns differ most in snow, from Long Island to the Tug Hill Plateau. We are a Fort Lauderdale, Florida, dealer of pre-engineered steel building kits made from American steel since 2005, not a New York manufacturer. Our metal buildings in New York ship with PE-stamped drawings for the parcel.
Snow comes first, and lake-effect snow most of all. In November 2014 a storm left 65 inches in south Cheektowaga, near Buffalo, and the National Weather Service counted hundreds of major roof collapses. Tug Hill almost always gets more than 200 inches a year.
The state code sets its own floor for snow. Every design ground snow load must be at least the New York State minimum map value times 1.6, and above 1,000 feet the mapped value rises by 2 psf for every 100 feet. Winters are long and cold; see our guide to insulating a metal building.
Footings go below the frost line your building department sets: 36 inches in Smithtown on Long Island, 50 inches in the Town of Ephratah in Fulton County. A local contractor pours them to our anchor bolt layout. One state code applies outside New York City, enforced town by town; see the codes and permits section below.
New York at a Glance
What We Engineer for:
Ground snow load set for your site, never below the state minimum map times 1.6, plus 2 psf per 100 feet above 1,000 feet
Buffalo’s Southtowns and the Tug Hill Plateau, where more than 200 inches a year is normal; the drawings list your figure
Design wind speed and exposure category under ASCE 7; Long Island towns mark a windborne debris zone along the coast
Footings below the depth your building department sets, from 36 inches on Long Island to 50 inches in Fulton County
The 2025 Uniform Code statewide outside New York City, enforced by your city, town or village
Building Codes and Permits in New York
New York has one code for the whole state outside New York City, which keeps its own: the Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code. The 2025 Uniform Code, with the 2025 Building Code of New York State, took effect on December 31, 2025. Our drawings are prepared to the edition in force; your building department is the authoritative source.
Your city, town or village enforces the code and issues the permit. A municipality may opt out by local law; the county then takes over, and if the county opts out too, the New York Department of State does. We don’t pull the permit; we supply PE-stamped drawings, load calculations and specifications.
Every drawing set lists the site’s ground snow load, wind speed and exposure category, and the frame, purlins, bracing and anchor bolts are sized to them. In New York the ground snow figure can never fall below the state minimum map times 1.6. Snow retention is specified with the roof; see wind load vs snow load.
The Uniform Code exempts agricultural buildings: barns and sheds that house farm equipment, livestock, hay or grain, used directly and solely for farming. A building with living space, public access, or employees processing or packing produce is not exempt. Your town may still require a permit under local law, and inside an agricultural district Agriculture and Markets Law §305-a bars local rules that unreasonably restrict farm operations.
Steel Buildings We Deliver Across New York
What a Steel Building Costs in New York
The price of a steel building in New York depends on its size, its finish level and the engineering the site calls for. In New York that engineering follows snow: a lake-effect town or a hill site above 1,000 feet adds frame weight, a Long Island lot less. Steel building kits for sale in New York are quoted site by site, so send your town and county with the request.
From 20×20 to 30×40: garages, equipment shelters and small farm sheds.
From 30×50 to 40×80: workshops, hay and machinery barns, and shop-and-office buildings.
From 60×80 up: warehouses, commercial buildings and large barns for dairy farms.
The same 40×60 takes more steel on a Tug Hill farm than on a Long Island lot, and every 100 feet of elevation above 1,000 feet adds 2 psf to the mapped ground snow load.
A bare kit of frame, roof and wall panels sits at $. Insulation, doors and liner panels move it to $$, and a finished office inside to $$$. Dollar ranges by size are in our metal building cost guide.
How New York Owners Use Steel Buildings by Region
Western New York (Buffalo, Rochester, Batavia, Warsaw; Erie, Monroe, Genesee, Wyoming counties)
Western New York is dairy and snow country. New York is the fifth largest dairy state, with nearly 2,800 dairy farms, and in May 2024 Wyoming County farms marketed more milk than any other county. Farms here add heifer barns and machinery storage built for the Lake Erie snow belt; see our livestock barns.

North Country and Tug Hill (Watertown, Lowville, Canton, Utica; Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence, Oneida counties)
The North Country runs on dairy too: 137 farms in St. Lawrence County and 130 in Lewis County shipped milk in May 2024. It also takes the heaviest snow east of Lake Ontario, with nearly 4 feet near Carthage and Croghan in one November 2022 storm. Farms keep feed dry in our metal hay barns.

Hudson Valley and Capital Region (Albany, Kingston, Poughkeepsie, Newburgh; Albany, Ulster, Dutchess, Orange counties)
The Hudson Valley grows apples on both banks of the river, two of the state’s six apple districts, and New York ranks second in apples behind Washington. Orchards and farm stands need packing, bin and equipment space, and a covered side bay keeps a tractor out of the weather; see our metal buildings with lean-to.

Long Island (Smithtown, Riverhead, Southampton; Nassau and Suffolk counties)
Long Island builds for the coast more than for snow. Smithtown’s design sheet puts a windborne debris zone within a mile of the shore and sets footings 36 inches deep. Owners here store boats and campers through the winter; see our RV garages.

Design Your Building NowFrequently Asked Questions
It needs the ground snow load set for your site, and we engineer the frame to that figure. The state code sets a floor: the New York minimum map value times 1.6, plus 2 psf for every 100 feet above 1,000 feet. Our guide to metal building roof styles shows which ones shed snow best.
Yes, if the building is used directly and solely for farming: the Uniform Code exempts barns and sheds for equipment, livestock, hay and grain. Living space, public access or employees processing produce end the exemption. Your town may still ask for a permit and check zoning, so call the building department before you order.
Your city, town or village building department, in most of the state. If a municipality has opted out of enforcing the code, the county does it, and where the county has opted out too, the New York Department of State issues the permit. New York City has its own codes and permit process.
Yes, we supply pre-engineered kits for commercial buildings and farm barns across New York. Clear-span frames keep the floor open for racking, equipment or stalls, and the design can include an office section and overhead doors.
Yes, we deliver across the state, from Buffalo and the North Country to the Hudson Valley and Long Island. On a rural parcel, make sure a truck can reach the pad, especially in winter. We confirm your production schedule and delivery window when your order is finalized. DIY crews and local erectors work from the same drawings; if you want installation arranged, ask when you request your quote.
