Why Sacramento Builders Choose Steel
Metal buildings in Sacramento often go up behind a house: a garage for a project car, a weekend workshop or a larger residential steel building. Past the suburbs come small farms: two thirds of the county’s 1,118 farms cover less than 50 acres, according to the USDA 2022 Census of Agriculture. Hay and forage take 27,101 acres, second only to grapes, so hay barns come up often.
If you are looking for a custom metal building company that serves Sacramento, we are a dealer of pre-engineered steel building kits, and every quote is a custom configuration. American-made steel, drawings stamped by a licensed professional engineer and delivery to your site come from us. We have no branch office or yard in Sacramento. Your crew or a local erector handles installation; if you want installation arranged, say so in your quote request.
Sacramento, the state capital, grew where the American River meets the Sacramento, and floods shaped it. After the floods of 1861 and 1862, downtown streets were raised as much as 14 feet; today levees, the Sacramento Weir and Folsom Dam hold back the rivers. Statewide rules are in our California codes and permits section.
The permits section below shows who reviews a Sacramento site.

Sacramento Building Permits and Local Codes
The office depends on which side of the city line your parcel is on. Inside Sacramento city limits, the Community Development Department handles permits and plan review, and almost every application goes in online through the city’s permit portal. In unincorporated areas such as Rio Linda, Wilton or the Delta, Sacramento County Building Permits and Inspection issues the permit. In Elk Grove, Folsom or another city of the county, call that city.
Your quote package includes PE-stamped structural drawings with the wind and seismic loads for your parcel, load calculations, specifications and an anchor bolt layout. Since January 1, 2026, the city reviews new applications under the 2025 California Building Standards Code and its own local amendments. The site plan, grading and floodplain paperwork are for you or your contractor to prepare.
Flood rules come first here. In the county, a Floodplain Management Permit is needed before you build or move soil in a flood hazard area, and an elevation certificate before the building is used. In the city, Natomas is FEMA zone A99, and since July 1, 2024 a new commercial building there must be elevated or floodproofed. Check your parcel on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center first.

What a Steel Building Costs in Sacramento
Every Sacramento quote is priced on size, finish and parcel loads. Here the price moves most with the footprint, the door openings and whether the lot sits in a flood zone. For dollar ranges by size, see our metal building cost guide.
A garage for one or two cars runs 20×30 to 30×40, a weekend workshop about 24×35, and a stock room for a small business 40×60. Hay growers and horse owners on acreage go wider, from 40×80 up. An RV garage with a tall door covers a travel trailer or a boat.
With no ground snow load on the valley floor, the frame is sized for wind and earthquakes, and both loads are on your drawings. In the Delta and Natomas, a barn or garage built at grade must be fully vented and anchored against flooding.
Most buildings sit on a concrete slab, poured by your local contractor to our anchor bolt layout. The city rates termite damage as very heavy, and a steel frame gives termites nothing to eat. Our steel building foundation guide compares the options.

From Quote to Installed Building
Send the width, length and height, the ZIP code of your Sacramento County parcel and what the building is for, say a two-car garage or a hay barn. We calculate the wind and seismic loads for that site, lay out the anchor bolts and return a line-item quote with the PE drawing package.
You or your contractor file the PE-stamped drawings with the City of Sacramento inside city limits, or with Sacramento County outside them. A flood-zone lot also needs floodplain approval. Plan reviewer questions on the engineering come straight to us.
Lead time and the delivery schedule are confirmed at order. The kit arrives pre-cut and pre-drilled, ready for your crew or a local erector. Truck access to the parcel is confirmed before the kit ships.
Sacramento Steel Building Questions
Yes. We deliver to Sacramento and across the county, including Elk Grove, Folsom, Galt, Rio Linda and Wilton, and to all eight neighboring counties. Call with your parcel address.
Inside city limits, the City of Sacramento Community Development Department issues it; in unincorporated areas, Sacramento County Building Permits and Inspection does. We supply the engineering package; you or your contractor file it.
Installation is done by your own crew or a local erector you hire; the kit, the PE-stamped drawings, the anchor bolt layout and delivery come from us. If you would rather have installation arranged, say so when you request your quote.
Maybe not. On a parcel of at least 20 acres or zoned AG-20, the county offers an agricultural exempt permit for a barn that stores hay, grain, livestock or farm implements, set at least 50 feet from property lines and other buildings. Over 5,000 square feet it gets a structural review; over 10,000 it isn’t exempt. A hay barn can’t later become a commercial riding stable without a change-of-use permit. See our metal farm buildings.
Often, where raising it is impractical. County rules for the Delta, Natomas and the Cosumnes River levee areas let a barn or garage stand at grade if it is built of flood-resistant materials, fully vented, has an opening at least 10 feet wide and is anchored against flooding. Wiring goes 1.5 feet above the base flood elevation. Tell us your flood zone.
