Why Steel Works in Missouri
Steel buildings hold up in Missouri when the frame is engineered for its own site. We are a dealer of pre-engineered steel building kits made from American steel, and our metal buildings in Missouri arrive with PE-stamped drawings for the parcel.
Wind comes first. Cold arctic air meets warm, humid Gulf air over the state, and the storms bring high winds, hail and tornadoes. On May 22, 2011, an EF5 tornado with winds over 200 mph hit Joplin and killed more than 150 people, the deadliest tornado in Missouri history. The drawings carry the design wind speed and exposure category for your address under ASCE 7. Read how steel frames handle storms and tornadoes.
The southeast lies in the New Madrid seismic zone, the most active seismic area in the country east of the Rockies. Between December 1811 and February 1812 it produced three earthquakes of magnitude 7 or greater. Snow is heavier in the north, which averages more than 20 inches a year, the south less than 5. Each drawing set shows the seismic design category and roof snow load for the parcel.
Permit rules and flood maps are in the codes and permits section below.
Missouri at a Glance
What We Engineer for:
Severe storms bring tornadoes, hail and high winds statewide; design wind speed and exposure category set per site under ASCE 7
Southeast Missouri lies in the New Madrid seismic zone; your parcel’s seismic design category is on every drawing set
More than 20 inches of snow a year in the north and less than 5 in the south; roof snow load follows your site and local code
The Mississippi and Missouri rivers flood in wet years; check your parcel on FEMA flood maps before the pad goes in
No statewide code for private buildings; cities and some counties adopt the IBC and IRC and enforce them locally
Building Codes and Permits in Missouri
Missouri has no statewide building code for private construction. Cities, towns and villages adopt their own, often an edition of the International Building Code and International Residential Code. State law lets counties of the first and second classification adopt a code as well, and a county that had none before August 28, 2001, needs voter approval first. A 2021 state list shows county building codes in 12 of Missouri’s 114 counties, among them Jackson, St. Louis, Boone and Greene. Drawings are prepared to the edition your jurisdiction enforces; your building department has the final word.
Inside city limits, start with the city building department, as in Kansas City, St. Louis or Springfield. On unincorporated land, the county issues permits where it has a code; where it has none, ask about zoning and floodplain rules before you order. We don’t pull the permit; we supply PE-stamped drawings, load calculations and specifications.
State law keeps county zoning away from the raising of crops and livestock, and since 2025 no county fire code may require a permit for farm buildings. A county building code sets its own rule for barns and equipment sheds, so ask whether an agricultural exemption applies to your parcel and what it requires.
The 1993 Mississippi River flood was one of the most severe climate events in the state’s history, and the 2019 floods were the worst since. Check your parcel on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center and with your county. Footings go below the frost depth your building department sets, and a local contractor pours them to our anchor bolt layout. Slab and pier options are in our steel building foundation guide.
Steel Buildings We Deliver Across Missouri
What a Steel Building Costs in Missouri
The price of a steel building in Missouri depends on its size, the loads of its site and its finish. Wind design and, in the southeast, seismic bracing add frame weight.
From 20×20 to 30×40: sheds, garages and hobby shops.
From 30×50 to 40×80: steel homes, equipment sheds and workshops.
From 60×100 up: machinery and hay barns, cattle barns and warehouses.
A 40×60 near Cape Girardeau, close to the New Madrid seismic zone, can need more bracing than the same building near Kirksville, where the frame is sized more for snow.
The $ tier covers the kit itself: frame, roof and wall panels. Insulation, overhead doors and liner panels move it to $$, and a finished living space or office inside to $$$. Our metal building cost guide lists dollar ranges by size.
Missouri Cities We Deliver to
Delivery and installation is statewide. These cities have a dedicated page with local permitting detail.
If your city isn’t listed, we still deliver to it. Call (888) 415-1576 or use the quote form above.
How Missouri Owners Use Steel Buildings by Region
Northern Missouri (Kirksville, Macon, Chillicothe, Hannibal; Adair, Macon, Livingston, Marion counties)
Northern Missouri is row crop country with the state’s snowiest winters. Missouri farmers harvested about 5.7 million acres of soybeans and 3 million acres of corn for grain in 2022, and Macon County ranks second in the state for land in farms. Planters, combines and grain carts need wide, tall doors; see our tractor barns.

Kansas City and Western Missouri (Kansas City, Sedalia, Butler, Nevada; Jackson, Pettis, Bates, Vernon counties)
Western Missouri joins a big metro to wide farmland: Vernon County leads the state in land in farms, with Bates County third. In April 2001, hail as large as 3 inches fell along the I-70 corridor from the Kansas City area to St. Louis. Around Kansas City, contractors and distributors store stock and equipment in our metal warehouses.

St. Louis and Central Missouri (St. Louis, St. Charles, Columbia, Jefferson City; St. Louis, St. Charles, Boone, Cole counties)
Many of the state’s county building codes sit here, so a permit is part of the plan. In 1993 the Mississippi crested near St. Louis at 49.6 feet, almost 20 feet above flood stage, and the New Madrid seismic zone area takes in the city. Families on acreage outside the suburbs add garages, hobby shops and steel homes; see our residential metal buildings.

Southwest Missouri and the Ozarks (Springfield, Joplin, Branson, West Plains; Greene, Jasper, Taney, Howell counties)
The Ozarks run on grass and cattle. Missouri counted about 4 million cattle and calves at the end of 2022 and cut hay or haylage on about 3.1 million acres. The Joplin tornado struck here in 2011, so wind design leads every drawing set. Calving pens and working alleys fit under our livestock barns.

Southeast Missouri and the Bootheel (Cape Girardeau, Sikeston, Poplar Bluff, Kennett; Cape Girardeau, Scott, Stoddard, Dunklin counties)
The Bootheel is flat Mississippi lowland with the wettest climate in the state, about 55 inches of rain a year. Missouri grew cotton on about 356,000 acres in 2022, Stoddard County ranks fifth for land in farms, and the New Madrid seismic zone runs beneath it. See our metal barns.

Design Your Building NowFrequently Asked Questions
No. Missouri has no statewide building code for private construction. Cities adopt their own, and counties of the first and second classification may adopt one, with voter approval if they had no code before 2001. Our drawings follow the edition your city or county enforces; your building department has the final word.
It depends on where the parcel sits. Inside a city, expect a building permit. In a county with a building code, ask whether an agricultural exemption covers your barn or equipment shed. Since 2025, county fire codes cannot require a permit for farm buildings.
Yes. Each frame is drawn for the design wind speed and exposure category of the site under ASCE 7, and in the southeast for the seismic design category near the New Madrid zone.
Yes, we deliver across Missouri, from Kirksville to Joplin and the Bootheel. Make sure a truck can reach the pad. We confirm your production schedule and delivery window when your order is finalized. Your crew or a local erector assembles the building; if you want installation arranged, ask when you request your quote.
Yes. A steel barndominium comes as a pre-engineered kit drawn for your site’s wind, snow and seismic loads. Where a city or county enforces the residential code, the living space goes through its permit and inspections. Tell us the floor plan and shop size with your quote request.
