Why Steel Works in Louisiana
Steel buildings hold up in Louisiana when the frame is engineered for its own site. We are a dealer of pre-engineered steel building kits from American steel, and our metal buildings in Louisiana arrive with PE-stamped drawings for the parcel.
Wind comes first. Hurricanes strike Louisiana about once every three years on average. In 2020 Hurricane Laura came ashore with 150 mph winds and a 15-foot storm surge, the strongest to hit the state since 1856, and left massive damage across southwestern Louisiana. Near the coast the code maps wind-borne debris regions, where windows and glazed doors must resist impact or be covered. Our guide to steel buildings in coastal and hurricane zones explains how frames and anchors carry that load.
Water is the second load. Southeastern Louisiana averages only about 3 feet of elevation, and the state has lost almost 2,000 square miles of land since the 1930s. Rain falls all year, from about 50 inches in the north to 70 in the southeast, so a closed building needs vapor control; see how to stop condensation in a metal building. The drawings carry the design wind speed, exposure category and flood design data for the parcel.
Flood zones, parish permits and farm rules are in the codes and permits section below.
Louisiana at a Glance
What We Engineer for:
Design wind speed and exposure category set for your parcel under ASCE 7; a hurricane strikes the state about once every three years
In mapped debris regions near the coast, windows and glazed doors are impact resistant or get an impact-rated covering
In a FEMA flood hazard area, design follows ASCE 24; your parish can require more freeboard, never less
About 50 to 70 inches of rain a year; vapor barriers and ventilation keep condensation off the panels
The 2021 IBC and IRC with state amendments, in force since January 1, 2023; every parish and city enforces them
Building Codes and Permits in Louisiana
Louisiana enforces one construction code statewide: the 2021 International Building Code and International Residential Code with state amendments, in force since January 1, 2023. The Louisiana Uniform Construction Code Commission adopts and amends it, and the 2024 editions are scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027. Drawings are prepared to the edition your jurisdiction enforces; your building department is the authoritative source.
Every parish and municipality must enforce the state code, and none may opt out. Inside city or town limits, start with the city permit office; in unincorporated areas, with the parish. Plan review and inspections are done by inspectors licensed by the commission, public or private. We don’t pull the permit; we supply PE-stamped drawings, load calculations and specifications.
State law keeps farm structures out of local code enforcement: barns, sheds and poultry houses built on a farm for farm use. A home, or a building attached to one, never qualifies, and a barn later converted to another use loses the exemption. The parish can still require a building permit, so call before you order.
For homes and commercial buildings, the FEMA National Flood Insurance Program standards apply. In a flood hazard area, including coastal high hazard areas and coastal A zones, the state amendments call for design under ASCE 24, and a parish floodplain manager may require more freeboard, never less. Check your parcel on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center. A local contractor pours the footings or piers to our anchor bolt layout.
Steel Buildings We Deliver Across Louisiana
What a Steel Building Costs in Louisiana
The price of a steel building in Louisiana depends on its size, the loads of its site and its finish. Coastal wind and flood design add steel and foundation work.
From 20×20 to 30×40: garages, carports with storage and boat or RV shelters.
From 30×50 to 40×80: steel homes, shops and equipment buildings.
From 50×100 up: warehouses, rice and hay storage and commercial buildings.
A 40×60 in a coastal parish inside a wind-borne debris region, with impact-rated openings and a floor raised above the flood elevation, gets a heavier frame and more foundation work than the same building inland near Shreveport.
The $ tier covers the kit itself: frame, roof and wall panels. Insulation, overhead doors and liner panels move it to $$, and a finished living space or office inside to $$$. Our metal building cost guide lists dollar ranges by size.

How Louisiana Owners Use Steel Buildings by Region
Southwest Louisiana and Acadiana (Lake Charles, Lafayette, Crowley, Abbeville; Calcasieu, Lafayette, Acadia, Vermilion, Jefferson Davis parishes)
This is rice country. Acadia Parish planted about 99,000 acres of rice in 2022, rice leads Jefferson Davis Parish too, and Vermilion Parish has more land in farms than any other parish. The region also took the worst of Hurricane Laura. Combines and grain carts need wide, tall doors and a dry floor; see our metal farm buildings.

Capital Region and the Sugar Parishes (Baton Rouge, Hammond, New Iberia, Thibodaux; East Baton Rouge, Livingston, Tangipahoa, Iberia, Lafourche parishes)
Louisiana grew sugarcane on about 486,000 acres in 2022, and Iberia Parish alone planted about 66,000. In August 2016, 20 to 30 inches of rain fell in three days and flooded thousands of homes and businesses around Baton Rouge and Hammond. A steel home here starts with the flood elevation of the lot; see our residential metal buildings.

Southeast Louisiana (New Orleans, Metairie, Slidell, Houma; Orleans, Jefferson, St. Tammany, Terrebonne parishes)
The southeast is the lowest and wettest part of the state, with land averaging about 3 feet of elevation and up to 70 inches of rain a year. Hurricane Katrina’s storm surge flooded the east of the state in 2005, and more than 1,500 people died in Louisiana. Storage and service yards here are built to coastal wind loads and flood rules; see our metal warehouses.

North and Central Louisiana (Shreveport, Monroe, Alexandria, Farmerville; Caddo, Ouachita, Rapides, Union, Concordia parishes)
The north raises poultry and cattle. Union Parish held about 6.8 million broilers at the end of 2022, and the state counted about 730,000 cattle and calves. Winters bite harder here: in February 2021 the northwest stayed below freezing for five straight days, with severe icing. Calving sheds and feed storage fit under our livestock barns.

Design Your Building NowFrequently Asked Questions
Yes. Louisiana enforces the 2021 International Building Code and International Residential Code with state amendments, in force since January 1, 2023, and every parish and municipality must apply them. The 2024 editions are scheduled for January 1, 2027. Our drawings follow the edition your jurisdiction enforces; your building department has the final word.
It depends on the use. The state code is not enforced on a farm structure, such as a barn, shed or poultry house built on a farm for farm use. Your parish can still require a building permit, and a barn that later becomes a home or a shop loses the exemption. Ask the parish permit office before you order.
Yes. A barndominium is a home, so it needs a permit and follows the International Residential Code with state amendments, however large the farm around it. In a flood hazard area the FEMA program standards apply, and the parish floodplain manager confirms the required elevation. Send your parcel address with your quote request.
They are engineered for the design wind speed and exposure category of the exact site under ASCE 7; the design wind speed rises toward the Gulf. Parcels in a wind-borne debris region also get impact-resistant or protected windows and glazed doors. Your building official confirms the figures, so send the full address with your quote request.
Yes, we deliver across Louisiana, from Lake Charles to Shreveport and Slidell. Make sure a truck can reach the pad. We confirm your production schedule and delivery window when your order is finalized. Your crew or a local erector assembles the building; if you want installation arranged, ask when you request your quote.
