Why Steel Works in Maryland

Steel buildings hold up in Maryland when the frame is engineered for its own site. We are a dealer of pre-engineered steel building kits from American steel, and our metal buildings in Maryland, from horse barns to barndominiums, arrive with PE-stamped drawings for the parcel.

The state changes a lot from west to east. The Appalachian counties in the northwest see more than 100 nights below freezing in a year, while the southeast, between the Atlantic and the Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in North America, sees fewer than 20. So the snow load and frost line on your drawings depend on the county.

Storms come from two sides. Nor’easters bring winter wind and snow, and in February 2010 snowstorms shut the federal government for four and a half days. On the shore, Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy did wind and surge damage. The drawings carry the design wind speed, exposure category and snow loads under ASCE 7. Salt air near the bay is hard on steel; see our guide to anti-rust coatings.

County figures for frost depth, snow and wind are in the codes and permits section below.

Maryland at a Glance

What We Engineer for:

1
Snow Load

Ground snow load set by your county, for example 40 psf in Carroll County; your address goes on every drawing set

2
Wind

Design wind speed set by your county, for example 115 mph in Carroll County and higher near the ocean; state law bars counties from weakening wind design rules

3
Flood Zones

Sea level in the Chesapeake Bay is rising faster than the global average; flood-resistant construction rules are part of the state code

4
Frost Depth

Footings go below the county frost line, for example 30 inches in Carroll County and deeper in the western mountains; a local contractor pours them to our anchor bolt layout

5
Codes

One statewide edition of the IBC, IRC and IECC, the 2021 codes since May 2023; counties and cities enforce them and may amend them

Building Codes and Permits in Maryland

Building codes in Maryland

State law, the Maryland Building Performance Standards, puts every jurisdiction on the same edition of the International Building Code, International Residential Code and International Energy Conservation Code. The 2021 editions have been in force since May 29, 2023. Each county, Baltimore City and municipality may amend the codes for local conditions, but not weaken the energy code or the wind design rules. Your building department is the authoritative source.

Who issues the permit

Enforcement is local. Your county, Baltimore City or a town that runs its own program reviews the plans, issues the permit, inspects the work and issues the use and occupancy certificate. Electrical work falls under a separate electrical code. We don’t pull the permit; we supply PE-stamped drawings, load calculations and specifications.

Farm buildings

The state code includes an appendix for agricultural buildings, the barns and sheds that house equipment, hay, grain, poultry or livestock. Counties set their own permit rules for them; Carroll County, for example, inspects farm buildings against its building, plumbing and electrical codes. In 20 named counties, the state code does not apply to a farm building built with agritourism as a secondary use. A barndominium is a home and goes through the residential code.

Frost depth, snow and foundations

Older county tables on file with the state list an 18-inch frost depth and 20 psf snow load for Worcester County, and 36 inches and 40 psf for Garrett. Ask your county for its current figures. A local contractor pours the footings to our anchor bolt layout; our foundation guide covers the options. Check flood risk on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center and with your county.

What a Steel Building Costs in Maryland

The price of a steel building in Maryland depends on its size, the loads of its site and its finish. Western snow and shore wind add steel.

Size and height

From 20×40 to 30×40: garages, storage buildings and small shops.

From 30×50 to 40×80: barndominiums, horse barns with stalls and farm buildings for equipment.

From 50×100 up: riding arenas, grain and equipment storage, offices and other commercial buildings.

Local loads (Maryland-specific)

By the older county tables, a 40×60 in Garrett County, with a 40 psf ground snow load and a 36-inch frost line, gets a heavier roof frame and deeper footings than the same building in Worcester County, where the snow load is 20 psf but the design wind speed reaches 125 mph.

Finish level

The $ tier covers the kit itself: frame, roof and wall panels. Insulation, overhead doors and liner panels move it to $$, and a finished living space or office inside to $$$. Our metal building cost guide lists dollar ranges by size, and the indoor riding arena cost guide covers arenas.

How Maryland Owners Use Steel Buildings by Region

Western Maryland (Hagerstown, Cumberland, Frostburg, Oakland; Washington, Allegany, Garrett counties)

Western Maryland is mountain country, with the most nights below freezing in the state and a high risk of flash floods. Washington County ranks first in Maryland for both milk and cattle sales, and in Garrett County hay is the top crop, on 23,084 acres. Farmers here need dry storage for round bales through a long winter; see our metal hay barns.

North-central Maryland (Frederick, Westminster, Towson, Bel Air, Elkton; Frederick, Carroll, Baltimore, Harford, Cecil counties)

This is Maryland’s horse country. The state counted 26,115 horses and ponies at the end of 2022, and Cecil County had the most, 3,273, and ranked first for horse sales. Frederick and Baltimore counties each had more than 2,800, and Frederick County leads the state in land in farms. Owners pair stalls with a tack room and a run-in shed. Start with our horse barns and stables.

Central and Southern Maryland (Annapolis, Columbia, Waldorf, Prince Frederick, Leonardtown; Anne Arundel, Howard, Prince George’s, Charles, Calvert, St. Mary’s counties)

Between Baltimore and Washington and down the western shore of the bay, most buyers are homeowners and small businesses. Heavy rain is a real risk: Ellicott City flooded in 2016 and again in 2018, when 6 to 12 inches of rain fell. Homeowners add garages, studios and guest space on suburban lots; see our residential metal buildings.

Eastern Shore (Chestertown, Easton, Cambridge, Salisbury, Ocean City; Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, Dorchester, Wicomico, Worcester counties)

The Eastern Shore is flat grain and poultry country. Maryland grew soybeans on 531,904 acres and corn for grain on 422,129 acres in 2022, and Queen Anne’s County ranks first in the state for grain sales. Wicomico County leads in poultry and egg sales, and the state had about 60.6 million broilers on hand. In 2012 Sandy pushed a 4 to 5 foot surge into Crisfield. Combines and planters need wide doors; see our tractor barns.

Design Your Building Now
30×40 Garage

I wanted space for a weekend car and a proper set of tool cabinets. We checked the layout before deciding on the width. Being able to open the car doors comfortably makes the garage feel much more useful than our old space.

Ralph F.  Frederick, Maryland

40×60 Storage Building

Our small business needed room for seasonal stock without renting another unit. The building lets us keep incoming items separate from finished orders. We can also count inventory without moving every box, which makes the whole process less frustrating.

Louise J.  Salisbury, Maryland

30×50 Workshop

I repair and build furniture, and the old shop was limiting the size of projects I could take on. The new space leaves room for long pieces during assembly. It is easier to work carefully when everything is not crowded together.

Stephen S.  Hagerstown, Maryland

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The Maryland Building Performance Standards put every county and city on the 2021 International Building Code, Residential Code and Energy Conservation Code. Local jurisdictions enforce them and may amend them, but not weaken the energy code or the wind design rules. Our drawings follow your jurisdiction’s edition; your building department has the final word.

It depends on the county. The state code includes rules for agricultural buildings, and each county sets its own permit process; Carroll County, for example, inspects farm buildings against its building, plumbing and electrical codes. A barndominium or a shop with living space is a home and goes through the residential code.

They are engineered for the figures your county adopts. Carroll County, for example, sets a 40 psf ground snow load and a 115 mph design wind speed; Worcester County’s older table lists 20 psf and 125 mph. Send the full address with your quote request.

Your crew or a local erector assembles the building; if you want installation arranged, ask when you request your quote.

Yes, both come as pre-engineered steel building kits drawn for your county’s snow and wind loads. An arena needs a wide clear span and a door big enough for a tractor to groom the footing. Tell us the stall count and arena size with your quote request.
