Why Augusta Builders Choose Steel

Metal buildings in Augusta often start as a steel barn for horses, hay and the tractor. Horses are part of farm life on both sides of the county line: Columbia County counted 754 horses and ponies at the end of 2022, and Richmond County 203, according to the USDA 2022 Census of Agriculture. Almost half of Columbia County’s farms cover 10 to 49 acres, the size where a few stalls and a hay bay share one roof.

If you are looking for a custom metal building company that serves Augusta, we are a dealer of pre-engineered steel building kits, and every quote is a custom configuration. American-made steel, drawings stamped by a licensed professional engineer and delivery to your site come from us. We have no branch office or yard in Augusta. Your crew or a local erector handles installation; if you want installation arranged, say so in your quote request.

Wind is the load to plan for. In September 2024, Hurricane Helene’s gusts brought trees down across Richmond, Columbia and McDuffie counties, and hundreds of buildings there were destroyed, per the National Hurricane Center. Your drawings carry the design wind speed for your parcel. Wind design does not cover a falling pine, so place the building clear of tall trees. Statewide rules are covered in our Georgia codes and permits section.

Augusta Building Permits and Local Codes

Who issues the permit

For most parcels in Richmond County, Augusta Planning & Development issues the building permit, and its list of work that needs one names utility and storage buildings. The Residential Permitting Division on Marvin Griffin Road takes applications in person, by email or through the online portal. Hephzibah runs its own Building Inspection Department. Across the county line in Evans or Grovetown, the permit comes from that county or city.

What we supply

Your quote package includes PE-stamped structural drawings with the design wind speed for your parcel, load calculations, specifications and an anchor bolt layout. The Augusta permit application asks for the square footage under roof, which our drawings show, and for the design professional’s state license number; ask us about it at order. The plot plan is for you or your contractor to prepare.

Special local factors

Two reviews come before the building permit. A lot in a flood zone needs a Flood Permit from the Zoning office, with an elevation certificate. A parcel in one of Augusta’s historic districts needs a Certificate of Appropriateness for any exterior work. Check your parcel on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center first.

What a Steel Building Costs in Augusta

Every Augusta quote is priced on size, finish and parcel loads. Here the price moves most with the footprint, the number of stalls and doors, and whether the lot sits in a flood zone. For dollar ranges on a common barn and shop size, see our 40×60 metal building cost guide.

Size

In our Augusta reviews, a garage for the car and the garden gear runs 24×40, and a workshop with room for a bench and equipment 30×50. Center-aisle stable barns on our site come in 36×48, 38×64 and 40×56. An open-sided hay barn keeps round bales dry without a full enclosure.

Local loads

Your PE drawings carry the design wind speed for your parcel. A lot in a flood zone adds the Flood Permit and an elevation certificate, and can set the floor height, so check the flood zone before you request the quote.

Foundation

Garages and shops usually sit on a concrete slab. In a stall barn the slab often covers only the aisle and the tack room. Either way, your local foundation contractor sizes it to match our anchor bolt layout.

Serving Augusta and Surrounding Richmond County

We deliver across Richmond County: Augusta, Hephzibah, Blythe and the area around Fort Gordon. Neighboring Columbia County, with Evans, Martinez, Grovetown and Harlem, is on the route, as are McDuffie, Jefferson and Burke counties and, across the Savannah River, Aiken and Edgefield counties in South Carolina.

We don’t have a branch office in Augusta. All orders are handled from our main office in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and one representative stays with your project from the first call through delivery.

Horse country runs on both sides of the river. In Aiken, Hitchcock Woods keeps about 70 miles of sandy trails open to riders, according to the Hitchcock Woods Foundation. For stall layouts, aisle widths and ventilation, read our horse barn and stable guide. Pasture parcels often end in a gravel or dirt drive, so mention it when you call with the address.

Send the width, length and height, the ZIP code of your parcel and what the building is for, say a six-stall barn with a tack room or a 30×50 shop. We calculate the wind loads for that site, lay out the anchor bolts and return a line-item quote with the PE drawing package.

Engineering and Permitting

You or your contractor file the PE-stamped drawings with Augusta Planning & Development, or with Hephzibah, or with the neighboring county if your parcel is across the county line. A flood-zone lot gets its Flood Permit first. Plan reviewer questions on the engineering come straight to us.

Delivery and Installation

Lead time and the delivery schedule are confirmed at order. The kit arrives pre-cut and pre-drilled, ready for your crew or a local erector. Truck access to the parcel is confirmed before the kit ships.

30×50 Workshop

I had been doing repairs in a small shed with the doors left open for space. The new shop fits the equipment and a proper bench. I can keep tools laid out during a job instead of packing them away each evening.

Terry J.  Augusta, Georgia

24×40 Garage

We wanted storage for the car and our gardening equipment without cramming everything together. The extra depth leaves a useful section at the rear. I keep frequently used items near the side entrance so they are easy to grab.

Pamela S.  Augusta, Georgia

40×60 Business Storage Building

We needed room for flooring materials and tools between installations. The building lets us sort supplies by job and keep a clear loading area. Being able to see what is ready has helped us prepare without unnecessary last-minute rearranging.

Augusta Steel Building Questions

Yes. We deliver to Augusta and across Richmond County, including Hephzibah and Blythe, to neighboring Columbia, McDuffie, Jefferson and Burke counties, and to Aiken and Edgefield counties in South Carolina. Call with your parcel address.

For most of Richmond County, Augusta Planning & Development does, and its permit list includes utility and storage buildings. Hephzibah has its own building inspector. We supply the engineering package; you or your contractor file it.

Installation is done by your own crew or a local erector you hire; the kit, the PE-stamped drawings, the anchor bolt layout and delivery come from us. If you would rather have installation arranged, say so when you request your quote.

Plan on it. Georgia’s farm exemption covers only NRCS-designed structures used for manure storage, animal mortality composting or winter feeding, so an ordinary barn or stable is usually not exempt. Ask about your parcel before you order, and see our metal farm buildings.

A frame engineered to the design wind speed of your parcel, anchors set to the anchor bolt layout, and a site clear of tall trees. No building can promise to survive every storm. Our guide to anchors for metal buildings explains how the frame is tied down.
