Building Description

The defining characteristic of a community recreation building is programming flexibility across a single floor plate, and the 60×80 footprint delivers that flexibility without the spatial pressure that forces smaller facilities into activity conflicts. A full-size volleyball court fits within 60×80 with regulation run-off zones on all four sides. Badminton courts, futsal, indoor pickleball, and aerobics programming all operate within this footprint independently or in combination depending on daily scheduling – without permanent court markings restricting alternative use.

The 20-foot eave height is the threshold at which recreational programming expands beyond floor-level activities. Basketball shooting drills, indoor batting practice, gymnastics vaulting, and climbing wall installations all require vertical clearance that 14 and 16-foot structures cannot provide. At 20 feet, the building supports suspended divider curtains that split the floor into two independent programming zones during simultaneous activities – a scheduling capability that dramatically increases the number of programs a facility can run per week without adding square footage.

Acoustic management becomes a primary design consideration at this interior volume. Hard floor surfaces, steel wall panels, and high ceilings produce reverberation times that degrade speech intelligibility during events and classes. Acoustic batt insulation behind interior wall liner panels, ceiling-mounted absorption baffles, and strategic placement of sound-dampening materials along the upper sidewalls address this without visible impact on the interior aesthetic. Restroom facilities, storage rooms, and a small equipment staging area should be positioned along one endwall to preserve the full 60×80 floor area for programming use.
