Building Description

Red iron construction uses hot-rolled wide-flange steel sections – the same I-beam profile specified in commercial and industrial building construction – rather than the cold-formed light-gauge framing used in entry-level metal garage kits. The practical difference shows up under load. Red iron rigid frames handle higher snow loads, stronger wind pressures, and the point loads imposed by overhead crane runways and vehicle lift anchors without the deflection concerns that limit how light-gauge structures can be used for demanding mechanical work.

The 45-foot clear span removes the center column that constrains workflow in narrower garage configurations. Two full-size trucks, a vehicle on a four-post lift alongside a project car on a two-post lift, or a large recreational vehicle with a dedicated work zone on either side all fit within this span without repositioning equipment to access any part of the floor. The 60-foot depth provides a front-to-rear zone long enough for a full-size dually with a fifth-wheel trailer attached, with room for a workbench wall and parts storage along the rear elevation.

The 17-foot eave height drives door selection and lift specification simultaneously. A 16-foot overhead door opening – the standard clear height for commercial truck access – fits within this eave with structural header clearance to spare. Four-post lifts reaching maximum rise heights of 72 to 80 inches clear the 17-foot eave with adequate overhead margin for safe operation across all vehicle classes from passenger cars through Class 3 trucks.
