Building Description

Four thousand square feet of active growing area fundamentally changes the economics of greenhouse production. Running five parallel growing zones across the 40-foot width – two perimeter benches, two intermediate beds, and a center production row – with 48-inch working aisles between each zone delivers over 1,400 square feet of net growing surface. At standard plant densities for leafy greens and herbs, that surface area supports weekly harvest volumes in the range of 800 to 1,200 pounds per cycle depending on crop selection and production method.

The 16-foot eave height accommodates overhead monorail systems for harvest cart movement along crop rows – a labor efficiency tool that becomes cost-effective above 3,000 square feet of growing area. It also provides structural clearance for high-intensity supplemental lighting installations, CO₂ enrichment distribution lines, and ceiling-mounted climate sensors that feed automated environmental control systems increasingly standard at this production scale.

Mechanical systems at 4,000 square feet require engineered specifications rather than rule-of-thumb sizing. Heating capacity, ventilation fan arrays, irrigation pump stations, and electrical service loads must be calculated against crop type, regional climate data, and production schedule before construction begins. The galvanized steel frame is engineered to commercial building load standards and accepts gutter-connected expansion bays on either endwall, allowing the facility to scale in 40×50 increments as production demand grows.
